For many families, spending time together during holidays and special occasions is something they cherish.  For people with mobility needs, transportation barriers can make these moments difficult to enjoy. Thanks to NDAD’s Accessible Van Loan Program, families across North Dakota are finding new freedom and flexibility to travel together comfortably and safely.

Karla Young recently experienced the impact of the program firsthand when her family was able to spend a meaningful Easter holiday weekend together with her mother, Eloise (103 years young).

“NDAD’s accessible van loan program allowed our family to spend a wonderful Easter holiday weekend together,” Karla shared. “This wonderful service made it possible for us to transport my mom so we could all be together.”

A Simple Solution to a Common Challenge

Like many families searching for wheelchair-accessible transportation options, Karla and her family began their search online.

“We searched for wheelchair-accessible vans near Grand Forks and easily found NDAD,” she explained. “We called and made the reservation, and NDAD provided clear instructions and guidelines to use the van. It was a simple process.”

This ease of access is a core goal of NDAD’s Accessible Van Loan Program. The program exists to reduce one of the most common barriers individuals with health challenges face – reliable, accessible transportation – by offering short-term access to wheelchair-accessible vans for personal use.

Designed for Everyday Life and Special Moments

NDAD’s Accessible Van Loan Program supports a wide range of needs, whether families are attending medical appointments, visiting loved ones, participating in community activities, or celebrating holidays together. By offering accessible transportation options, the program helps ensure individuals who use wheelchairs or other mobility devices are not limited in where they can go or what they can do.

For Karla’s family, that meant stress-free travel and more quality time together.
“We look forward to using the van again in the future,” she said. “It makes our visits so much more enjoyable with mom. It’s truly appreciated.”

Supporting Independence, Dignity and Connection

At it’s heart, the Accessible Van Loan Program aligns with NDAD’s focus to empower individuals with disabilities and their families while promoting independence and inclusion throughout North Dakota communities. Transportation is more than just getting from one place to another – it’s about maintaining relationships, participating fully in community life, and preserving dignity and independence.

By making accessible vehicles easier to obtain, NDAD helps families focus on what matters most: time together.

“Thank you, once again, to NDAD for the wonderful offer of the accessible van,” Karla added.
