NDAD Helps New Salem Family Access Therapies

For many North Dakotans, traveling for specialized medical care is a regular part of life—especially when it goes beyond routine family medicine. That’s been the experience for Kayla Hewitt and her son, Tanyon.
In the summer of 2024, Tanyon was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. He also faces several developmental challenges, including speech delay, mixed receptive-expressive language disorder, gross and fine motor impairments, and global developmental delay.
In addition to the services he receives through Head Start, Kayla and Tanyon travel every Wednesday from their home in New Salem to Bismarck for occupational and speech therapy.
“When he was diagnosed, our state worker immediately told us about NDAD and the programs that might be able to help,” Kayla recalls.
NDAD provides direct financial assistance to help individuals with health challenges travel for essential medical care. This support can help cover costs such as mileage, lodging, meals, and other travel-related expenses when treatment is not available locally. Whether it’s a routine appointment or a specialized procedure out of town, NDAD’s goal is to ease the financial burden of medical travel so individuals can access the care they need without delay.
“We haven’t qualified for other programs because we’re right on the edge of eligibility,” Kayla explains. “Some days it feels like you have to be either really rich or really poor—and we’re neither. NDAD helps pay for our gas to get to appointments. It’s such a big help and a huge relief.”
Despite the challenges, Kayla finds joy in watching her kids just be kids. Tanyon, along with his twin sister, loves to play, jump, and climb. He’s especially fond of farm animals, building and categorizing, and goes through phases of favorite movies and music.
“If you need a little help, call NDAD,” Kayla encourages. “Even if you think you won’t qualify, give it a shot. Be an advocate for your child and your family—there are resources out there.”
To receive assistance, you must complete an application and meet NDAD’s eligibility guidelines. Contact your nearest NDAD office to learn more.
