NDAD Steps in When Mobility Becomes a Challenge

Accessible van and essential equipment loans help families stay safe and connected.
Karen Kazmaier is no stranger to NDAD. For years, she worked full-time at a local hospital in Minot while also working part-time at Bingorama. The last 15 years of her career were spent at NDAD’s Minot office, handling accounting and gaming operations and assisting with new client intake.
“Faye Gibbens [NDAD co-founder] hired me, so I had a good idea of all the good work the organization does,” Karen recalls. “I never knew I’d be a client one day.” That day came after her husband, Richard, suffered two strokes. Suddenly, everyday tasks became major health challenges.
“It’s very difficult to get him in and out of the car to go to doctors’ appointments or anywhere,” Karen shares. “He uses a walker around the house, but we don’t go far from home. It can be dangerous because he can fall so easily, like he’s done in the past.”
When leaving the house, Richard relies on a wheelchair – a necessity that quickly became exhausting for Karen. “It wears me out getting the wheelchair in and out of the car. Winter is especially hard for us to go out.”
Fortunately, NDAD’s Minot office offers free wheelchair-accessible vans for short-term loans, making transportation safer and easier for families like the Kazmaiers. “NDAD’s vans make the entire experience more comfortable and wonderful!” Karen says.
These vans allow individuals with mobility challenges to attend medical appointments, family events and community activities without the physical strain and safety risks of traditional vehicles.
In addition to borrowing vans, Karen has also used NDAD’s Healthcare Equipment Loan Program, which provides short-term loans of essential medical equipment such as wheelchairs, walkers and bathroom safety items.
“Even if it’s a walker for a few days, NDAD will help you out,” Karen emphasizes. “Just give them a call to see how their services work for you!”
Karen says she’s always impressed by the quality of equipment and the kindness of staff. “Everyone in the office is nice and easy to work with.”
