“Without NDAD, I couldn’t live in my own home. It’s made a really big difference in my life,” shared Trevor Vannett, of Bismarck, N.D. Diagnosed with cerebral palsy, Trevor knows well how challenging it can be to live independently. As a member of the North Dakota State Council on Developmental Disabilities, Trevor is a strong advocate for the disability community.

Nearly a decade ago, Trevor was referred by another agency and was able to get a hoyer lift from NDAD. More recently, he’s received assistance with prescriptions, the transit program as well as gas cards for medical travel. He said without NDAD he wouldn’t be able to pay for these things he typically can’t afford.

NDAD has been life-changing for him as travel, even in-town, can be a financial burden. “This past year, I had to go to Minneapolis for appointments. [NDAD] has been a godsend,” he said. “Without this assistance, I couldn’t afford the trip.”

Requesting assistance is a phone call or email away. Individuals can contact their nearest NDAD office for an application for NDAD’s Direct Financial Assistance Program. Those who qualify may receive funds for prescription medication, medical equipment and supplies, home accessibility, medical travel assistance, personal attendant care, transportation or recreational activities.

“NDAD has helped me live independently, which is important to me. It’s a great organization that makes a world of difference,” told Trevor. “I’d encourage people to contact them, even if it’s for a small part of the program.”
