Freedom on Wheels: NDAD Helps Richard Stay Active
Published: Monday, December 29, 2025
Getting around can be a challenge when you rely on a wheelchair. Richard of Mayville knows this well—he’s been using a wheelchair since age 11. Over time, transferring Richard in and out of a car became increasingly difficult.
Thanks to NDAD and his friend Thomas Henderson, that challenge has a solution. For several years, the duo has relied on NDAD’s accessible van loan program, making it easier for Richard to enjoy life beyond the nursing home.
“We usually go out at least one Sunday a month for an outing to a restaurant or other events. I’ve even been able to take him to Fargo for a baseball game with friends,” Thomas shares.
While Thomas originally borrowed vans from NDAD’s Grand Forks office, he was thrilled when the service expanded to Fargo. Now, he can pick up a van in his home city, drive to Mayville, and head out with Richard for a day of fun.
“It makes a big difference for us to be able to get him out of the nursing home and doing activities!”
NDAD currently offers six accessible vans with ramps—two each in Grand Forks, Fargo, and Minot. These vans are available free of charge to full-time wheelchair users and their drivers for pre-approved events within North Dakota. The only requirement? Return the van with a full tank of gas and a clean interior.
Thomas has also benefited from NDAD’s Healthcare Equipment Loan Program (HELP), which provides short-term loans of essential medical equipment.
“My wife needed assistance in the past, and when my mom was living in Grand Forks, we also used the equipment loans,” Thomas notes. “Without a doubt, please call NDAD. They can help!”
Thomas ends with the reminder: “The staff are wonderful and accommodating. They make the whole process seamless.”
