A Lifeline on the Road: Ruben’s Journey with NDAD

Imagine facing multiple serious health conditions and needing to travel several hours, multiple times a week, just to receive life-sustaining care. That’s the reality for Ruben Sotelo.

Ruben lives with chronic renal failure, which requires dialysis three times a week. The nearest dialysis unit is in Dickinson—two hours away from his home. The long drives, the time commitment, and the financial strain could easily become overwhelming for any family.

But, thanks to NDAD’s medical travel assistance, Ruben and his family aren’t facing this travel alone.

“NDAD has been a great help,” says Margo, Ruben’s mother. “The medical travel assistance has made a huge difference. Without it, we wouldn’t be able to get him to the care he needs.”

Margo first learned about NDAD through her community. “I remember seeing a poster in the 20/20 Building about NDAD’s services. It mentioned help with travel expenses,” she recalls. She reached out to Jeremy at NDAD’s Williston office. “The application was simple, and Jeremy was so respectful and easy to work with.”

For families like the Sotelos, NDAD’s support goes far beyond financial assistance – it offers peace of mind, dignity and hope. With emotion in her voice, Margo adds, “I’m so grateful for you. I wish I had more words. Nothing compares to NDAD’s generosity.”

NDAD’s direct financial assistance programs are designed to ease the burden of medical travel and help individuals maintain greater independence and well-being. Whether it’s a long drive to dialysis, therapy, or other essential care, NDAD is here to help.

“We all need help at some point in our lives,” she says. “I can’t imagine what we would do if we couldn’t get Ruben to Dickinson. Your whole organization—you're angels walking the earth.”

If you or someone you know needs to travel for medical care, NDAD encourages you to reach out and learn about the generous approval process. Visit ndad.org, or contact your nearest NDAD office to learn more and begin the application today.
