Living with dual knee amputations presents daily challenges. Simple tasks—like leaving the house or getting to medical appointments—can become complex, especially when travel involves long distances and you don’t drive.

“I use a home health agency to help me get to appointments,” shares Colleen Rohr of Dickinson. “They come into my house, take me to Bismarck, and bring me back home.”

Colleen travels over 90 miles to Bismarck about once a month for medical care. NDAD helps ease the financial burden by covering her medical travel expenses. “I’m so glad assistance was available for me,” she says.

In addition to travel support, NDAD also helps Colleen afford necessary medical supplies – costs that were once overwhelming. “Life was a lot more difficult when I had to pay for everything myself. I was surprised to learn this kind of help was available,” she notes.

She found the application process simple and appreciated the support from Chantel at NDAD’s Dickinson office. “It’s pretty easy with Chantel there to help. NDAD has been amazing.”

Her advice to others in similar situations? “If someone needs help, I’d tell them to apply. It’s a great resource.”

NDAD provides direct financial assistance to help individuals with health challenges access essential medical services and equipment. This includes support for medical travel, prescriptions, adaptive equipment, personal attendant care and other health-related needs not fully covered by insurance or other programs. NDAD’s goal is to reduce financial barriers and empower individuals to live more independently and with dignity.
