West Fargo Public Schools Expands Sensory Support for Students

NDAD is proud to support West Fargo Public Schools with a $5,000 Gibbens Memorial Grant to help create a new sensory gym for students with disabilities and complex support needs.
Creating More Opportunities for Learning and Independence
The funding will help purchase specialized sensory gym equipment, including a sensory gym system, swings, and accessories for students participating in the district's specialized special education program. The space will provide a dedicated environment where students can engage in sensory and movement activities designed to support emotional regulation, focus, and participation in learning.
The sensory gym will help address a gap in age-appropriate resources for students transitioning beyond elementary school, giving them continued access to individualized supports that promote success both inside and outside the classroom.
“Every learner deserves access to an environment that supports their growth,” said Coltyn Penberthy, Special Education Coordinator for West Fargo Public Schools. “This sensory gym will provide students with meaningful opportunities to build independence, strengthen self-regulation skills, and participate more fully in their educational experience.”
Supporting Success Through Accessibility
In addition to purchasing equipment, the project includes staff training to ensure the sensory gym is used safely and effectively to meet a variety of student needs. The district anticipates improved readiness for learning, increased classroom participation, and greater independence for students who utilize the space.
“Creating access to the right supports can make a meaningful difference in a student's ability to learn, connect, and thrive,” said DeAnn Burckhard, NDAD Marketing Director. “We're proud to support West Fargo Public Schools as they create opportunities for students with disabilities to build confidence, develop life skills, and reach their full potential.”
Continuing a Legacy of Impact
NDAD's Gibbens Memorial Grant supports projects that enhance health, well-being, and quality of life for individuals in at-risk populations. Established in 2015 in honor of NDAD founders Faye Gibbens and Ron Gibbens, the grant carries forward their legacy of creating meaningful opportunities and improving lives across North Dakota.
