Supporting Independence and Connection for Older Adults

NDAD is proud to support Lutheran Social Service’s North Dakota Senior Companion Program with a $1,500 Gibbens Memorial Grant, helping older adults maintain independence and stay connected within their communities.
Meeting Everyday Needs with Compassion
The Senior Companion Program connects dedicated volunteers with older adults who wish to continue living independently at home. Through a personalized, one-on-one approach, volunteer companions help with nutrition, social and recreational activities, home management, information and advocacy, and respite support for caregivers.
In addition, the program offers a door-through-door model of transportation assistance—an especially valuable service for individuals who are transit-dependent and may need extra support beyond traditional transportation options.
“The individualized approach by our volunteers helps to alleviate the stress and anxiety that older individuals often experience with group transportation services that only provide curb-to-curb or door-to-door assistance,” said Becky Telin of Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota.
Enhancing Quality of Life Through Connection
By building trusted relationships and providing tailored support, the Senior Companion Program helps reduce isolation, increase confidence, and improve overall well-being for older adults across North Dakota.
“Programs like the Senior Companion Program make a meaningful difference by helping older adults remain independent while staying connected to their community,” said DeAnn Burckhard, NDAD Marketing Director. “When we support personalized, accessible services, we’re not only meeting practical needs—we’re helping individuals maintain dignity, build relationships, and continue living life on their own terms.”
Continuing a Legacy of Impact
NDAD’s Gibbens Memorial Grant supports projects that enhance health, well-being, and quality of life for individuals in at-risk populations. Established in 2015 in honor of NDAD founders Faye and Ron Gibbens, the grant carries forward their legacy of creating meaningful opportunities and improving lives across North Dakota.
