NDAD is proud to support the Red River Human Services Foundation (RRHSF) with a $10,000 Gibbens Memorial Grant to strengthen programs that help individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities build independence, develop life skills, and engage more fully in their communities.

Creating Meaningful Opportunities for Growth

The funding will support two initiatives designed to enhance quality of life for individuals receiving services through RRHSF. The first, Safe & Independent: Daily Living Skills Lab, will provide hands-on opportunities for participants to practice everyday skills such as meal preparation, personal hygiene, household safety, budgeting, and other activities that promote greater independence. The second project will establish a portable Adaptive Music and Movement Technology Studio, allowing individuals with a wide range of abilities to participate in music, movement, recreation, and group activities using accessible technology and adaptive equipment.

Together, these projects will give participants more opportunities to build confidence, make choices, strengthen social connections, and develop skills that support everyday life and community participation. The equipment and resources purchased through the grant will be used on an ongoing basis, benefiting current and future participants for years to come.

“Every individual deserves opportunities to learn, grow, and participate in ways that reflect their unique strengths and abilities,” said Tonya Leon, Chief Executive Officer of Red River Human Services Foundation. “This funding will help us provide engaging, person-centered experiences that promote independence, choice, and meaningful inclusion in the community.”

Supporting Independence and Inclusion

RRHSF serves approximately 350 individuals in the Fargo and Wahpeton areas through residential, community-based, recreational, and skill-development programs. By expanding access to adaptive learning tools and inclusive recreational opportunities, these projects will help participants develop practical skills, increase self-confidence, and strengthen their ability to live safe, fulfilling, and connected lives.

“Independence looks different for every person, but everyone deserves the opportunity to develop skills, make choices, and participate fully in their community,” said DeAnn Burckhard, NDAD Marketing Director. “We're proud to support Red River Human Services Foundation as they create opportunities that empower individuals with disabilities and help improve quality of life.”

Continuing a Legacy of Impact

NDAD's Gibbens Memorial Grant supports projects that enhance health, well-being, and quality of life for individuals in at-risk populations. Established in 2015 in honor of NDAD founders Faye and Ron Gibbens, the grant carries forward their legacy of creating meaningful opportunities and improving lives across North Dakota.
