NDAD Supports Inclusive Recreation Through West Fargo’s Adaptive Adventures Program
Published: Wednesday, May 6, 2026
NDAD has awarded a $2,590 Adaptive Recreation Grant to the West Fargo Park District in support of its Adaptive Adventures program.
Offered at no cost to participants, Adaptive Adventures provides individuals of all abilities with meaningful opportunities to stay active, connected, and engaged while visiting the Rustad Recreation Center. The program creates a welcoming environment where participants can explore recreation at their own pace while building relationships and confidence.
Expanding Access Through Adaptive Equipment and Field Trips
Grant funding will be used to purchase adaptive recreation equipment and activity supplies that allow participants of all abilities to fully engage in program activities. Funding will also support field trip opportunities, giving participants the chance to experience recreational and community activities outside of the recreation center in a supportive group setting.
These enhancements ensure participants can explore new activities and environments while feeling safe, supported, and included.
Building Community and Belonging Through Recreation
“Programs like Adaptive Adventures play a critical role in bringing people together and strengthening our community,” said DeAnn Burckhard, Marketing Director at NDAD. “By supporting inclusive recreation, NDAD is helping create welcoming spaces where individuals of all abilities can build relationships, try new activities, and feel a sense of belonging—both inside the recreation center and throughout the broader community.”
The program focuses not only on physical activity, but also on connection, inclusion, and shared experiences that strengthen community ties.
Growing a Seasonal Program
“Our goal is to expand the Adaptive Adventures program into a regular seasonal offering running from November through April,” said Lance Belisle, Recreation Director for the West Fargo Park District. “Grant funding will allow the Park District to continue and strengthen this program by providing resources that enhance participant experience and engagement.”
By investing in adaptive equipment and inclusive programming, the West Fargo Park District continues to expand access to recreation for residents of all abilities.
Part of NDAD’s Statewide Adaptive Recreation Grant Program
The grant awarded to the West Fargo Park District is one of 12 Adaptive Recreation Grants distributed statewide through NDAD’s Adaptive Recreation Grant program during the current funding cycle. In total, NDAD awarded $60,390 to organizations across North Dakota that are increasing inclusive recreation and physical activity opportunities for people with disabilities.
Through partnerships like this, NDAD continues its commitment to building strong, inclusive communities where recreation is accessible to everyone.
