NDAD has awarded a $5,000 Adaptive Recreation Grant to the North Dakota Autism Center in support of its Outdoor Recreation Enhancements project.
The grant will help expand inclusive outdoor recreation opportunities for individuals participating in the organization’s Day Habilitation program by providing adaptive equipment designed to meet a wide range of physical and sensory needs.
Adaptive Equipment Designed for Safety and Inclusion
Grant funding will be used to purchase adaptive outdoor recreation equipment, including adaptive tricycles or ride-on devices, inclusive outdoor games, sensory-friendly movement equipment, balance and gross motor tools, and durable outdoor seating or play structures.
All equipment will be carefully selected to ensure safety, accessibility, and long-term durability, allowing individuals of varying abilities to participate comfortably and confidently in outdoor activities.
Meeting a Growing Need for Inclusive Recreation
“There is a strong and growing need for inclusive recreational opportunities in our area, particularly for individuals who require additional supports to safely and successfully participate in outdoor activities,” said Brittney Hogan, Executive Director of the North Dakota Autism Center. “We are grateful for NDAD’s support in helping us create an inclusive outdoor recreation environment that removes barriers to participation and aligns with our mission of empowering individuals with disabilities to fully engage in their communities.”
The expanded outdoor offerings will provide participants with opportunities for movement, exploration, and connection in a setting designed to support sensory regulation and physical development.
Supporting Health, Connection, and Quality of Life
“Inclusive outdoor recreation plays a vital role in physical health, sensory regulation, and social connection,” said DeAnn Burckhard, Marketing Director at NDAD. “NDAD is proud to support the North Dakota Autism Center as they expand safe, accessible opportunities that allow individuals of all abilities to enjoy and benefit from outdoor activity.”
By investing in adaptive recreation, NDAD helps ensure individuals with disabilities have meaningful opportunities to engage in activities that support independence, well-being, and community inclusion.
Part of NDAD’s Statewide Adaptive Recreation Grant Program
The grant awarded to the North Dakota Autism Center is one of 12 Adaptive Recreation Grants distributed statewide through NDAD during the current funding cycle. In total, NDAD awarded $60,390 to organizations across North Dakota that are expanding inclusive recreation and physical activity opportunities for people with disabilities.
Through these investments, NDAD continues to remove barriers and strengthen communities by supporting programs that make recreation accessible, inclusive, and welcoming for all.
