NDAD Support Helps Dickinson Resident Maintain Independence and Quality of Life

NDAD provides vital resources that help individuals with health challenges bridge financial gaps and access essential care. Through
direct financial assistance, medical travel help, healthcare equipment loans and more, NDAD reduces out-of-pocket costs for medical and everyday needs. That relief allows individuals and families to direct limited income toward other priorities—such as housing, food, and personal essentials—ultimately improving their overall quality of life.
For
Dickinson resident Luke Hurt, that support has made a meaningful difference.
Luke lives with several complex medical conditions, including scoliosis, cerebral palsy, legal blindness, arthritis, and osteogenesis imperfecta—a brittle bone disease that makes him highly prone to fractures. To stay active and independent, he relies on public transportation to get to work, buy groceries, and manage daily errands. But even with income-based housing, the costs of basic living needs add quickly.
“I worked more often, which led to my rent going up,” Luke explained. “Fortunately, NDAD is providing me assistance for my
paratransit rides. This covers the cost of getting to work and running errands like grocery shopping.
“I make enough to pay for my apartment and other incidentals. I’m extremely appreciative of the support.”
Luke shared that the application process was simple and stress-free—something he found refreshing.
“Everyone was prompt. I knew I’d get a call or email back quickly. I didn’t have to sit through a meeting or anything. It was easy paperwork, and the only thing I had to dig up was an old tax return,” he said. “With this experience, I see no reason not to inquire about other things NDAD offers.”
He also encourages others to reach out.
“NDAD’s modern approach is refreshing—there isn’t so much red tape,” Luke added. “I refer other people to NDAD for services. It’s worth the call.”
Stories like Luke’s highlight how NDAD’s mission directly impacts the daily lives of North Dakotans living with health challenges—helping them stay mobile, independent, and financially stable.
