NDAD has awarded Hoof It Forward of Fort Rice, North Dakota, a $5,000 Adaptive Recreation Grant to support its Every Body Rides Project. The funding will help expand safety and accessibility for equine assisted services by ensuring participants of all abilities and ages can fully engage through Hoof It Forward’s Mobile Extension Unit.

Hoof It Forward provides inclusive, community-based equine assisted services that support physical, emotional, and social well-being. The Every Body Rides Project is designed to remove physical barriers and create equitable participation opportunities—allowing riders of varying abilities to benefit from meaningful connections with horses.

“Horses partner with people in powerful ways that build confidence, strength, emotional regulation, independence, and community connection,” said Kristie Tschida, Executive Director of Hoof It Forward.

Removing Barriers to Participation

NDAD’s grant supports three key enhancements that improve access and safety across Hoof It Forward’s adaptive riding programs:

  • Portable, wheelchair-accessible mounting ramp to allow riders who use wheelchairs or walking aids to participate in mounted activities alongside others using the standard ramp
  • Adaptive “Itty Bitty Saddle” that provides added stability and support for young riders with low muscle tone
  • Additional ASTM/SEI-certified equine safety helmets to ensure proper protection for participants of all sizes and abilities

Together, these improvements allow participants to engage safely and confidently while receiving individualized support that meets their physical needs.

“Adaptive recreation grants like this allow us to expand not just access, but the depth of services available in communities across North Dakota,” said DeAnn Burckhard, Marketing Director for NDAD. “We are grateful to partner with organizations like Hoof It Forward who are intentional about inclusion and safety. Together, we can help ensure everyone—regardless of ability—has the opportunity to participate fully and feel welcome in their community.”

Creating Belonging Through Inclusion

According to Hoof It Forward’s leadership, the impact of expanded access extends well beyond riding sessions.

“The impact of NDAD’s grant truly extends beyond riding,” Tschida added. “When individuals of different abilities can participate fully—without being limited by inaccessible equipment—they gain confidence, physical strength, social connection, and a sense of belonging. Families experience joy seeing their loved ones safely enjoying new activities, and communities benefit from services that come directly to them and create space where every body is included.”

Hoof It Forward’s Mobile Extension Unit plays a critical role in this mission by bringing inclusive equine assisted services directly to local communities. By removing barriers related to distance, mobility, and equipment, the organization helps ensure access to adaptive recreation is not limited by geography or physical ability.

Through partnerships like this, NDAD continues its commitment to supporting programs that foster independence, inclusion, and participation—helping people of all abilities connect, grow, and thrive through recreation.
