NDAD has awarded a $5,000 Adaptive Recreation Grant to RoughRider AMBUCS of Bismarck to support the purchase of adaptive tricycles for use throughout the Bismarck Public School system.

Grant funding will be used to purchase Amtryke adaptive tricycles for elementary schools, expanding access to adaptive physical education and inclusive recreation opportunities for students with disabilities. The tricycles will allow more students to actively participate in biking units during physical education classes—riding and engaging alongside their peers.

Supporting Inclusive School Communities

Adaptive recreation resources play a critical role in ensuring students of all abilities can participate fully in school activities that promote movement, independence, and social connection.

“This grant is an investment not only in equipment, but in building stronger, more inclusive school communities,” said DeAnn Burckhard, Marketing Director at NDAD. “Through adaptive recreation resources, NDAD helps ensure students of all abilities can fully participate, connect with their peers, and experience the joy and independence that movement and recreation provide.”

The adaptive tricycles are designed to support a range of physical needs, helping remove barriers that may prevent students from participating in traditional biking activities.

Expanding Opportunities for Movement and Independence

RoughRider AMBUCS leaders say the new tricycles will make a meaningful difference for students participating in adaptive physical education.

“We will be using the grant to purchase Amtryke adaptive tricycles for use within the elementary schools in Bismarck,” said Kristina Bouley, Chapter President of RoughRider AMBUCS. “This will help engage more students in recreation and specifically their adaptive physical education. More children will have the opportunity to be independent with biking and experience mobility.”

The mission of RoughRider AMBUCS is to inspire people to conquer challenges related to mobility and independence. By providing adaptive tricycles across the Bismarck Public School system, the organization helps ensure students with disabilities can take part in biking activities and share the experience with their classmates.

Part of a Statewide Commitment to Adaptive Recreation

This award is one of 12 grants distributed statewide through NDAD’s Adaptive Recreation Grant program during the current funding cycle. In total, NDAD awarded $60,390 to organizations across North Dakota that are expanding inclusive recreation and physical activity opportunities for people with disabilities.

Through partnerships with organizations like RoughRider AMBUCS, NDAD continues its mission to promote access, participation, and inclusion—helping children and communities experience the benefits of recreation without barriers.
