Traveling 200 miles every six months for an entire day of medical check-ups can quickly take its toll. “I’ve had cancer twice before. Then about six years ago, the doctors found more cancer on my right lung,” shared Marlene Fowler of Watford City, N.D. Even though she’s had surgery to remove a fifth of her lung, she still needs to travel to Bismarck every six months for a CT scan and to see her cancer doctor.
Her prescription costs were becoming more than she could afford. The Chronic Care Manager with McKenzie County Health in Watford City helped Marlene with paperwork and connected her with NDAD.
“All my prescriptions were so expensive. I was getting depressed because I didn’t have enough money to pay for all of it,” she mentioned. Like many, Marlene relies on Social Security as a main source of income. Once her paperwork was completed and processed, Marlene received prescription assistance from NDAD.
Not long after, she realized she also needed assistance with medical travel. “I talked to Jeremy (client representative in Williston), and he said I could get signed up for that, too,” Marlene gladly noted. Even though her medical appointments are usually scheduled in one day to reduce her trips, the cost of gas was expensive. “Things really turned things around for me for the better when I got connected with NDAD.”
She hopes people call NDAD for the help they need. “My medicine was so expensive and the costs for travel were adding up. I’m so glad NDAD helped me get the support needed,” she said. “Just call them. They will do everything they can to help you, too.”
