Magic City Discovery Center Expands Sensory-Friendly Opportunities for Families

NDAD is proud to support the Magic City Discovery Center in Minot with a $5,000 Gibbens Memorial Grant to help create more inclusive and welcoming experiences for children and families with sensory sensitivities.
Creating an Accessible Environment for Every Visitor
Through its Sensory Friendly Nights program, the Magic City Discovery Center provides opportunities for children with sensory needs to explore, learn, and play in a supportive setting. Grant funding will help the organization expand sensory-friendly resources, including sensory bags with noise-reducing headphones and fidget tools, weighted lap pads, visual supports, staff training, and a dedicated quiet space for visitors who may need a break from stimulation.
The project will also help provide free admission during monthly Sensory Friendly Nights, ensuring more families can access these specialized experiences.
“We want every child and family to feel welcome, included, and comfortable when they visit the Discovery Center,” said Matthew Farnsworth of the Magic City Discovery Center. “This funding will allow us to add important resources and accommodations that help children with sensory needs fully participate in all the learning and fun our facility has to offer.”
Supporting Inclusion Through Play and Learning
Hands-on learning experiences can help children build confidence, creativity, and social connections. By reducing sensory barriers, the Magic City Discovery Center is creating more opportunities for children of all abilities to engage, explore, and learn alongside their peers.
“Every child deserves the chance to learn, play, and experience the world around them in a way that works for them,” said DeAnn Burckhard, NDAD Marketing Director. “The Magic City Discovery Center is creating opportunities for families to participate together while ensuring children with sensory needs have the support they need to feel comfortable and included.”
Continuing a Legacy of Impact
NDAD's Gibbens Memorial Grant supports projects that enhance health, well-being, and quality of life for individuals in at-risk populations. Established in 2015 in honor of NDAD founders Faye Gibbens and Ron Gibbens, the grant carries forward their legacy of creating meaningful opportunities and improving lives across North Dakota.
