Inclusive Fitness Builds Strength, Confidence, and Connection

The special education units of South Valley and Rural Cass are leading the way in inclusive physical education. Through an adaptive curriculum, they ensure that all students—regardless of ability—can participate meaningfully and succeed in physical education.
“Beyond improving physical fitness and learning healthy habits, the program fosters meaningful relationships between students with and without disabilities,” says Andrea Johnson, Co-Director of Special Education for South Valley and Rural Cass Special Education Units.
As part of this initiative, students took part in monthly adaptive workout sessions led by a coach from CrossFit Fargo. Each session began with a group discussion, followed by a 45 to 60-minute workout, and concluded with a pizza social—giving students time to connect and build friendships across school district boundaries. “He truly does an amazing job leading students and recognizing what each one
can do,” Andrea shares, praising the coach’s inclusive and motivating approach.
This effort was further supported by NDAD’s
Gibbens Memorial Grant, which funded their co-ability teams to compete in the
ABLE Games—the region’s first all-inclusive functional fitness competition. The ABLE Games celebrate athletes of all abilities, from elite competitors to individuals with special needs. “The kids worked so hard and had a great time,” Andrea adds.
Students also had the opportunity to design team t-shirts, with “Workout Wranglers” selected as the winning design. Of the 53 teams participating in the 2025 ABLE Games, 26 teams from South Valley and Rural Cass schools joined the adaptive fitness initiative, placing in various categories and demonstrating their dedication and enthusiasm.
“Our goal is for students to build relationships across district boundaries, engage in adaptive recreational opportunities, and embrace healthy living habits,” Andrea explains. “This project is incredibly beneficial and meaningful for our students. We truly appreciate NDAD’s support in helping our students be included in activities and make and establish new relationships across and outside of school district boundaries!”
NDAD is proud to support programs like this—where inclusion, empowerment, and community come together to create lasting impact.
