Valley-Edinburg School District Enhances Recess for All Students
NDAD is proud to support Valley-Edinburg School District with a $5,000 Gibbens Memorial Grant to bring more inclusive play opportunities to Crystal Elementary. The funding will support the purchase and installation of a Friendship adaptive swing system, creating a more welcoming and accessible playground environment for students of all abilities.

Creating Space for Every Child to Belong
For many students with mobility, sensory, or developmental needs, traditional playground equipment can limit participation. This new adaptive swing system is designed to change that—allowing multiple students to play together safely while encouraging connection, cooperation, and shared experiences.

“Currently, students with mobility, sensory, and developmental needs have limited access to playground equipment that allows for safe and meaningful participation alongside their peers,” said Dr. Evan Borisinkoff, Special Education Director. “The grant from NDAD gives us access to equipment that allows multiple students to engage simultaneously, promoting peer interaction and shared play.”

More Than Play—Building Inclusion
The Friendship swing is a multi-user adaptive system that supports a wide range of physical and developmental abilities. By expanding access to inclusive playground equipment, Crystal Elementary is fostering an environment where all students can participate fully in recess and outdoor activities, strengthening friendships and building a greater sense of belonging.

“Inclusive play is so important because it ensures every child has the opportunity to be part of the moment—to laugh, connect, and grow alongside their peers,” said DeAnn Burckhard, NDAD Marketing Director. “When we remove barriers on the playground, we’re not just creating access—we’re building confidence, friendships, and a stronger, more inclusive community for everyone.”

Investing in Communities Through the Gibbens Memorial Grant
NDAD’s Gibbens Memorial Grant supports projects that enhance health, well-being, and quality of life for individuals in at-risk populations. Established in 2015 in honor of NDAD founders Faye and Ron Gibbens, the grant continues their legacy of creating meaningful opportunities and improving lives across North Dakota.
