Central Middle School in East Grand Forks received $5,000 as part of NDAD’s Gibbens Memorial Grant in spring of 2024. They used their grant funds to purchase furniture specifically designed for students with developmental delays. These included adaptive seating, adjustable desks and tables, sensory integration tools and safety equipment. Central Middle School’s goal was to create a classroom environment that caters to the diverse needs of students and fosters a sense of belonging and acceptance within the school community.
“We are thrilled to share that this addition has already made a significant impact on the functionality of our learning spaces,” shared Danika Pearson, special education teacher with Central Middle School. She noted that the new furniture was specifically chosen to create a more inclusive environment, ensuring that all students, regardless of their needs, can participate comfortably and effectively in class.
“The flexibility and ergonomic design of the furniture has contributed to a more adaptable and supportive learning experience for everyone,” she noted. “It has truly transformed our classrooms, making them more welcoming and conducive to learning.” Since the furniture arrived, there has been a positive shift in student focus, comfort and overall engagement.
The Gibbens Memorial Grant honors NDAD co-founders, Faye and Ron Gibbens and their vision to always help individuals in need. It is offered twice a year through NDAD’s website. “We believe people of all abilities can live more satisfying, productive lives if they have the opportunity. Creating a safer and inclusive learning environment for students is imperative to learning and growing. We are grateful to be part of this important endeavor,” shared DeAnn Burckhard, NDAD Marketing Director.
Pearson continued her appreciation. “NDAD’s support has been invaluable. [Their] generosity helps us enhance the quality of education we provide. We are deeply grateful and look forward to further positive outcomes from NDAD’s contribution.”
