CCRI Expands Access with Independent by Design Lending Library
NDAD is proud to support CCRI with a $5,000 Gibbens Memorial Grant to expand its Independent by Design program through the development of a new Lending Library—helping individuals explore tools that support independent living.
Empowering Independence Through Choice and Practice
CCRI’s Independent by Design program is a leader in reimagining support for adults with health challenges, currently serving more than 40 individuals across the region. The program focuses on building independence by empowering personal choice, promoting safety, and using person-centered care and technology to support individuals living more independently without 24-hour care.
At the core of the program is a dedicated training space featuring an accessible kitchen, bathroom, and living area, where individuals can practice everyday life skills with staff support before applying those skills in their own homes.
Try Before You Invest
To further enhance these learning opportunities, CCRI is developing a Lending Library of adaptive and assistive items that individuals can trial before making purchasing decisions.
For example, someone learning to prepare meals independently can try tools like adaptive cutting boards, rocker knives, vegetable holders, or electric can openers—helping them identify what works best for their needs before investing in their own equipment.
“This project supports our vision of fostering skill-building and championing independence for the people we serve,” said Alita Hanson, Executive Director of CCRI.
Expanding Access to Practical Solutions
The Lending Library ensures individuals have access to practical, real-life solutions that make everyday tasks more manageable—supporting greater confidence, independence, and long-term success.
“Access to the right tools can make a meaningful difference in someone’s ability to live independently,” said DeAnn Burckhard, NDAD Marketing Director. “By supporting programs like this, we’re helping individuals explore what works for them, build essential life skills, and gain the confidence to live more independently on their own terms.”
Continuing a Legacy of Impact
NDAD’s Gibbens Memorial Grant supports projects that enhance health, well-being, and quality of life for individuals in at-risk populations. Established in 2015 in honor of NDAD founders Faye and Ron Gibbens, the grant carries forward their legacy of creating meaningful opportunities and improving lives across North Dakota.
