Annie's House Expands Inclusive Water Recreation with Support from NDAD
Published: Wednesday, May 6, 2026
Annie’s House Adaptive Recreation Program at the Anne Carlsen Center is expanding access to inclusive, water-based recreation thanks to a $5,000 Adaptive Recreation Grant from NDAD.
The funding will be used to purchase a large, stable four-passenger paddle boat designed to safely accommodate individuals of varying abilities. This adaptive equipment will provide participants with an accessible option to enjoy water recreation while participating alongside peers in a supportive and inclusive environment.
Creating Access, Connection and Community
Access to inclusive recreation plays an important role in building confidence, fostering connection, and enhancing overall quality of life for individuals with disabilities.
“Access to inclusive recreation is essential for building confidence, connection, and quality of life,” said DeAnn Burckhard, Marketing Director at NDAD. “By supporting Annie’s House and this adaptive water-based recreation program, NDAD is helping remove barriers and ensure more individuals have safe, meaningful opportunities to participate, engage, and enjoy summer activities alongside their community.”
Expanding Summer Water-Based Actvitities
With the addition of the adaptive paddle boat, Annie’s House plans to significantly expand its summer programming. The program will grow from four to eight weeks, with water-based activities offered approximately three times per week.
“This addition will allow us to safely serve more individuals while expanding meaningful recreational opportunities,” said Adam Sommers, Grant Writer for the Anne Carlsen Center. “We are grateful for NDAD’s continued partnership and appreciate their commitment to strengthening programs and improving quality of life for North Dakotans.”
The expanded programming is expected to serve an estimated 60 to 80 participants each summer, significantly increasing access to inclusive water-based recreation opportunities.
Part of NDAD's Statewide Adaptive Recreation Effort
The grant awarded to Annie’s House is one of 12 Adaptive Recreation Grants distributed statewide through NDAD during the current funding cycle. In total, NDAD awarded $60,390 to organizations across North Dakota that are increasing inclusive recreation and physical activity opportunities for people with disabilities.
Through investments like these, NDAD continues to support projects that turn accessibility into opportunity—creating inclusive experiences that strengthen individuals, families, and communities across North Dakota.
