ABLE, Inc. Expands Inclusive Recreation Through Adaptive Tricycles with NDAD Grant
Published: Wednesday, April 29, 2026
NDAD has awarded a $5,500 Adaptive Recreation Grant to ABLE, Inc. of Dickinson to support the purchase of adaptive recreational tricycles for its ICF/IDD Group Homes. The new tricycles will provide safe, inclusive recreational opportunities for individuals who are unable to independently ride a traditional bicycle.
The adaptive trikes are designed to support balance, stability, and varying mobility needs, allowing participants to enjoy outdoor recreation while engaging more fully with their community. For many individuals served by ABLE, Inc., this will be a first opportunity to experience biking in a meaningful, accessible way.
Expanding Access to Meaningful Recreation
Individuals living in Intermediate Care Facilities for Individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (ICF/IDD) often face significant barriers to recreational activities that many people take for granted. Adaptive equipment plays a critical role in removing those barriers and supporting overall well-being.
“Individuals living in ICF/IDD settings often face significant barriers when it comes to participating in recreational activities,” said Janelle Stoneking, CEO of ABLE, Inc. “We are grateful to NDAD for helping provide access to meaningful recreation, which is a key component of dignity and overall well-being. For many participants, this will be their first opportunity to experience biking in a truly meaningful way.”
Building Community Connection and Inclusion
Up to 24 individuals with health challenges are expected to benefit directly from the project. In addition to supporting physical activity and enjoyment, the adaptive tricycles will allow staff to engage more fully with residents during recreational outings. The increased visibility of group home residents participating in community recreation also helps reinforce that people with health challenges belong and participate alongside everyone else.
“These tricycles support more than recreation—they support connection, confidence, and community inclusion,” said DeAnn Burckhard, Marketing Director for NDAD.
A Long-Term Investment in Inclusive Recreation
“This grant represents a sustainable, long-term investment in inclusive recreation,” Burckhard added. “By funding durable, adaptive equipment like recreational tricycles, we are helping ensure ongoing opportunities for independence, participation, and connection. These investments not only enhance individual well-being but also strengthen communities by supporting inclusive activities that can be enjoyed for years to come.”
Part of NDAD’s Statewide Grant Program
This award is one of 12 grants distributed statewide through NDAD’s Adaptive Recreation Grant program during the current funding cycle. In total, NDAD awarded $60,390 to organizations across North Dakota that are increasing inclusive recreation and physical activity opportunities for people with disabilities.
Through partnerships with organizations like ABLE, Inc., NDAD continues its commitment to expanding access to recreation that promotes dignity, joy, and inclusion for people of all abilities.
