Celebrating 50 Years of NDAD
A Legacy of Compassion. A Future of Possibility.
In 1975, NDAD became an official nonprofit organization with a simple but powerful motto:
helping others to help themselves. Fifty years later, that notion continues to guide every service we provide, every mile we drive, and every person we support.
Where It All Began
NDAD’s story starts with a family — Ron and Faye Gibbens — and their determination to create a better future for their son, Mike, who was diagnosed with cerebral palsy. At the time, resources for people with disabilities were extremely limited. Families were often left to face enormous challenges alone. But Ron, Faye, and a small group of close friends and family believed change wasn’t just needed — it was possible.
They formed a support group rooted in compassion, resilience, and a belief in equal opportunity. That group became NDAD.
Rising to the Challenge
By the early 1980s, the need for services was growing, but financial resources were scarce. In 1981, NDAD had just
$83.75 in its bank account. Rather than give up, our founders got creative. In 1982, they made a bold move into
charitable gaming, opening a single site in Minot. Within six months, they had raised $24,000 — and a new chapter began.
Gaming revenue became a cornerstone for funding NDAD’s expanding programs. By 1985, bingo halls in Minot, Grand Forks, Williston, and Fargo were serving as both entertainment centers and engines for good and betterment of the communities.
This leap of faith has allowed NDAD to grow its client services budget year after year.
Always About People
Behind every dollar raised is a life changed.
A wheelchair ramp that helped a woman stay in her home. Communication equipment for a child finally able to connect with his family. Life-saving medications for someone who had nowhere else to turn. These are the stories that define NDAD.
In rural communities across North Dakota, NDAD helps people get to medical appointments, afford prescriptions, and access essential services not covered by insurance. Our support has touched every corner of the state.
Tested by Crisis. Strengthened by Service.
We’ve weathered many challenges and have maintained uninterrupted service with a single mission: to enhance the quality of lives of individuals facing health challenges. From devastating floods to an international pandemic to legislative changes affecting our day to day operations. No matter the situation, we adapted – forging new partnerships and continuing to prioritize sustainability, innovation and service.
50 Years. More than $65 Million in Support.
Since those early days to today, NDAD has provided over
$65 million in direct health-related services to North Dakotans — all while keeping administrative costs at just
10%. That means 90% of every dollar goes straight to the people who need it most.
Looking Ahead
While we celebrate this milestone, we know our work is far from over. Today’s challenges — from an aging population to rising medical costs — make NDAD’s mission more urgent than ever.
Fifty years ago, a small group believed they could change the world. We’re ready to forge ahead. Ready to grow. Ready to adapt. Ready to meet the next 50 years with the same passion and purpose that got us here.
