NDAD will host its 30th Annual Escape to the Lake Adaptive Water-Skiing Extravaganza on Saturday, June 20, 2026, at Nelson Lake Recreation Area near Center, North Dakota.

Now in its milestone 30th year, Escape to the Lake continues to provide individuals with health challenges the opportunity to experience the thrill of water sports using adaptive equipment, with support and guidance from trained volunteers. The event reflects NDAD’s longtime commitment to expanding access to recreation and promoting inclusive community experiences.

This year marks one of the largest turnouts in the event’s history, with approximately 90 individuals registered to participate in water activities and 48 signed up specifically for adaptive water skiing during morning and afternoon sessions. Family members, friends and caregivers are also invited to attend, creating a welcoming and supportive environment for all involved.

“Physical activity is important for everyone, but opportunities like this are especially meaningful for individuals who face barriers to participation,” said DeAnn Burckhard, NDAD Marketing Director. “Escape to the Lake is about more than water skiing—it’s about building confidence, creating unforgettable moments, and ensuring people of all abilities have the chance to experience the joy of being on the water.”

In addition to adaptive water skiing, attendees will enjoy pontoon rides, a catered picnic lunch and a water-ski show by the Aqua Addicts of Aberdeen, South Dakota. The event is free of charge, though advance registration is required for participants.

Escape to the Lake is held at Nelson Lake Recreation Area, where waters are safely warmed by a nearby power plant—offering a more comfortable and accessible experience for participants with varying health challenges.

The event is made possible through the support of sponsors including Sporting Chance, Aqua Addicts and Revolutions Power Sports, with special thanks to Minnkota for its continued partnership.

Beyond Escape to the Lake, NDAD remains committed to expanding access to adaptive recreation across North Dakota. The organization supports a range of opportunities—from swimming lessons and sled hockey to bowling and other activities—and has partnered on initiatives such as inclusive playground development and accessible golf experiences.
