The 28th Annual Escape to the Lake Adaptive Water-Skiing Extravaganza is scheduled for June 15, 2024. The event allows people with disabilities the opportunity to water-ski using adaptive equipment with support and guidance.

“Physical activity is important for everyone. This event helps our participants overcome physical barriers and experience the excitement of watersports,” states DeAnn Burckhard, NDAD Marketing Director. Between 30 to 60 individuals with disabilities participate in Escape to the Lake, plus family members, friends and caregivers.

In addition to adaptive water-skiing, Escape to the Lake includes pontoon rides, a catered picnic lunch and a water-ski show by Aqua Addicts from Aberdeen, S. Dak. as more entertainment. The event is free of charge and requires advanced registration by participants.

The event takes place at Nelson Lake Recreational Area near Center, N.Dak. (northwest of the Bismarck-Mandan metro area). Nelson Lake’s water is safely heated by the nearby power plant enabling a more comfortable experience for participants with varying physical challenges. Escape to the Lake is sponsored by NDAD, Sporting Chance and Aqua Addicts. Special thanks to Minnkota Power and Revolutions Power Sports for helping make the event successful.

NDAD also sponsors qualifying individuals with access to other adaptive recreation activities such as swimming lessons, sled hockey, bowling and more. Interested individuals should contact their nearest NDAD office.
