Golf is now more accessible in Grand Forks thanks to a new adaptive recreation initiative led by NDAD.

Through a donation from NDAD, a VertaCat mobility cart is now available at King’s Walk Golf Course—opening the door for individuals with limited mobility to experience the game in a new and meaningful way.

“NDAD is thrilled to help bring the VertaCat mobility cart to the Grand Forks Park District’s golf program,” said DeAnn Burckhard, NDAD Marketing Director. “This equipment gives golfers with mobility challenges a safe, empowering way to stay active and enjoy the game. Accessibility matters – and partnerships like this help us build stronger, more connected communities where recreation becomes limitless for everyone.”

Removing Barriers on the Course

The VertaCat mobility cart is an all-terrain, single-rider vehicle designed specifically for individuals facing health challenges. Its innovative design allows users to navigate the course with greater independence and comfort, helping remove physical barriers that have historically limited access to golf.

By bringing this equipment to Grand Forks, NDAD is expanding opportunities for inclusive recreation and ensuring more individuals can participate in community activities.

A Community Partnership for Inclusion

This effort reflects a shared commitment between NDAD and the Grand Forks Park District to create accessible, welcoming spaces for everyone.

“This addition represents a meaningful step forward in ensuring that everyone in our community has the opportunity to enjoy the game of golf,” said Jill Nelson, Grand Forks Park District Director of Golf Operations & Community Relations. “We are grateful to NDAD for their commitment to enhancing quality of life and supporting adaptive recreation.”

Increasing Access Through Scholarships

To further reduce barriers, NDAD has also established a scholarship fund to support participants. The VertaCat is available for use at no cost, and green fees for both the user and a companion are fully covered by NDAD.

This ensures that cost is not a barrier for individuals who want to take part in this experience.

“Investing in accessibility is an investment in community,” said NDAD CEO Don Santer. “At NDAD, we’re proud to support the VertaCat because it opens the door for more people to fully participate in recreation and experience the joy of the game. Partnerships like this with the Grand Forks Park District show how thoughtful investments can remove barriers, promote independence, and create inclusive spaces where everyone belongs.”
