North Dakota Association for the Disabled (NDAD) proudly marks its 50th anniversary in June 2025, celebrating five decades of service, advocacy, and support for individuals with disabilities and health challenges throughout North Dakota and surrounding regions.
Inspired by their son, Mike, born with cerebral palsy, Ron and Faye Gibbens founded NDAD in 1975 as they recognized a need for greater assistance and inclusion. Over the years, NDAD has grown into a trusted nonprofit resource. The organization has helped thousands of individuals access essential services, equipment, transportation, financial assistance, and a sense of community.
“Fifty years ago, NDAD was born from the belief that all people deserve opportunity, dignity, and independence,” said Don Santer, NDAD CEO. “This still drives us today, and we are honored to continue standing alongside the people we serve.”
Over the years, NDAD’s programs have evolved to meet changing needs — from funds for emergency medical travel assistance to adaptive recreation grants, durable medical equipment loans, and client advocacy. NDAD has maintained its commitment to personalized support, compassion, and community partnerships that make a real difference.
As NDAD looks to the future, its focus remains on expanding outreach, strengthening services, and embracing innovation to serve even more people with disabilities and health needs. Since its inception, NDAD has provided over $65 million in direct health-related services to North Dakotans – all while keeping administrative costs at only 10%.
“We’re proud of where we’ve been — but even more excited for what’s next,” said Don. “NDAD is committed to ensuring that no one faces disability or health challenges alone, now and for generations to come.”
