A Portland, N.D., man diagnosed early this year with stage 4 anaplastic T cell Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma is the focus of a fundraiser, highlighted by a benefit at Portland’s Norsemen Hall on Sat., Aug. 6.

All proceeds from the fundraiser will be used to help Charles “Chuck” Walden, 54, and his wife, Jeanne, with medical and general expenses.

The Aug. 6 benefit features a freewill-offering spaghetti feed, silent and live auctions, and a bake sale.

The event will begin with a 5 p.m. social hour and the start of both a silent auction and bake sale. Dinner starts at 6 p.m. The silent auction will conclude at 7:15 p.m., with the live auction starting at 7:30.

Norseman Hall is at 1100 Parke Ave. in Portland.

About Chuck
Charles Walden was raised in the Hatton, N.D., area. He is a 1986 graduate of May-Port CG High School. He attended Mayville State University before transferrring to the University of North Dakota, where he graduated in 1992.

While in college and afterward, Chuck served nine years in the Army Reserve.

After college, he worked as a parts manager at Case IH and as plant manager at American Woods in Grand Forks.

On May 5, 1990, Chuck married Jeanne Hoffman of Langdon. They moved to Portland in 1996 to start a family. They now have two adult daughters, Rebecca (Eric) Fugleberg, Milwaukee, Wis.; and Megan (Christopher) Gjelsness, Reynolds, N.D.; and three grandsons, Thomas, 6, Peter, 4, and Luke, 6 months.

With a partner, Chuck owned Main Drag Service and towing for several years. For the past 11 years, Chuck has been farming in rural Portland.

This past January, Chuck learned about his Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma diagnosis and was in the hospital for 64 days, more than half of which he spent in the intensive care unit of Sanford Hospital in Fargo.

Chuck is receiving on-going chemotherapy treatments at the Roger Maris Cancer Center in Fargo.
